This is my recap of the top searches for the week of March 21st – 27th, as according to Google Trends:
Emmy Noether
Google’s Doodles strike again! This past week, the search engine celebrated Emmy Noether’s 133rd birthday. Emmy Noether is recognized as one of the most brilliant physicists and important mathematicians of the 20th century. Most notable, in 1915, she proved that symmetry found in nature as a corresponding law of conservation (Vox).
One Direction Splits in Two
Millions of young girls are mourning the break-up of their favorite UK boy band. Zayn Malik finally confirmed his leaving the musical group this past week, which caused a pre-teen uproar across social media. His official statement reiterated that he is feels bad for letting his fans down, but that he can no longer keep doing something that does not make him truly happy (Rolling Stone).
Growing Trends
Iggy Azalea
A few weeks ago, the “Fancy” rapper made news by quitting Twitter. This week, she proudly announced her recent boob job. “Azalea seems to be making headlines this week not necessarily because she got cosmetic surgery, but because she is being surprisingly forthright about it. That bodes well for things to come but, for now, we’re still getting used to the idea that famous women can be open about breast augmentation.” (The Daily Beast).
March Madness
As March Madness continues, the Sweet Sixteen matches came to a close. The Elite Eight matches are set to play out this weekend. Kentucky, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Arizona have reserved their rights to represent the Midwest and West in the Final Four, leaving the remaining East and South teams to duke it out. Check out the official NCAA Division Bracket to keep track of which teams are making the cut.
Honorable Mentions
- Rob Kardashian is apparently struggling from depression.
- Rumer Willis is quickly proving herself to be the one to beat on “Dancing with the Stars”.
- March 23rd was National Puppy Day.
- “Pretty Little Liars” ratings soared during Tuesday’s #BigAReveal.
- Ronda Rousey signed a new, long term contract with the UFC.
- “Get Hard”, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, premiered in movie theaters.
- The Germanwings pilot has been deemed responsible for Tuesday’s plane crash, after hiding his mental health history from his employer.
Marketing professionals understand the power and impact of social media more than most. While Zayn leaving One Direction should be nothing more than a pop culture loss and temporary search trend, it is provoking the unfortunate. Similar to the #CutforBieber Twitter trend of 2013 – hoax or not – there is pressure among young fans to #CutforZayn (click here for details) in attempts to have him rejoin the band. If your son or daughter is a One Directioner, please be aware. If you suspect your child is struggling with this news, Teenline may be able to help.
