This is my recap of the top searches for the week of February 7th – 13th, as according to Google Trends:
And the Winner is…
Sam Smith and Beck were the biggest winners at the 2015 Grammys. Sam Smith won Grammy awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Pop Vocal Album. Beck won Album of the Year (beating out Beyoncé… which prompted Kanye West to pull another “Kanye”, threatening to go on stage as he did when Taylor Swift won at the 2009 MTV VMAs).
Among other Grammy nominees and performers this year, some of the most searched names include Madonna, Rihanna, Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, Miranda Lambert, ACDC, Gwen Stefani, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Sia and Annie Lennox.
Upcoming Movie Releases
The most popular upcoming film being talked about is “Fifty Shades of Grey”, which comes out today. Appropriate for Valentine’s Day, this novel-based movie is receiving many critically controversial reviews with regards to how risqué it will be considered, how it will reflect the BDSM community to the masses, and whether it will have any effect on the promotion of domestic violence and/or violence towards women.
The second most popular search was for “Spiderman”, as Sony Pictures recently announced their plans to bring Marvel into the mix. The third most popular was for “Pitch Perfect 2”, as the trailer was released this past week.
Growing Trends
Last week, questioning Bruce Jenner’s gender identity was all the rage. This week, Jenner’s unfortunate run-in with the law made headlines. Jenner was involved in an accidental vehicle collision, which resulted in the death of a woman.
Another increasing search is the speculation over whether Tiger Woods’ golf career is coming to a close. Woods announced his stepping away from competitive golf back in 2010, only to quickly resurface and win the following Masters’ tournament. This time around, Woods is choosing to take it slow to work on his technique, rest his back and rediscover his passion for the game. However, it is unsure as to how long this period of “recovery” will take, leaving a lot of room for questions.
