Facebook Deals & Google Offers Enter the Daily Deals Race

Looking to Compete With Groupon, LivingSocial

Social couponsWithin a week of each other, Google and Facebook have both announced that they will be entering the Groupon-esque daily deals race.

Google Offers, still in its trial period, is starting with a roll-out in Portland, OR before it expands to NYC and SF.

Facebook Deals launched on the heels of Google’s Announcement starting with a broader base in San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, and Atlanta and with a specific emphasis on deals that encourage people to be more social with group activities.

With other daily deal sites already in full swing, especially with the big fish in the sea like Groupon and LivingSocial in hot pursuit, do you think that Facebook and Google have what it takes to shake things up?

As massive as Google and Facebook are, this reminds me of Google jumping into the Social Network scene with Google Buzz – at some point, the big guys need to realize that they don’t have to be all things to all people.

Yup. I think Facebook has such a massive audience it can do whatever it wants. However Groupon sure seems to have penetrated a lot of peoples awareness…as you say they are already a big fish. I think it remains a question whether there is enough daily coupon biz for all three. Groupon might have what it takes to keep growing and be competitive in the future.
